Kindergarten Curriculum Unit 2
In unit two, students will start to learn phonetical concepts. It’s important that students learn the sounds and recognition of letters. Students will also start to learn directional language as well. Understanding directional words helps with science and social study educational attainment.
Students will also strengthen their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion by learning about specific Indigenous tribes and people, understanding different hair types, learning about kids in foster care, learn about gender and gender diversity, and understanding the difference between good and bad community workers.
During the first week, students will learn the letter L. Students will also learn about the Lakota people and create a land dedication. We will read the book Star People by S.D. Nelson.
During the second week, students will learn about the letter O. We will learn about directional words with the book Over and Under. Lastly, students will do a bathtub play with parents.
During week three, students will learn about the letter G. Then, students will be learning about Simone Biles.
During week four, students will learn about the letter H. They will learn about different hair and hairstyles while reading the book Hair Love. Then, students will create their own Hair Salon.
In the last week, students will do a letter sound review. Then, students will learn about community workers while also talking about their responsibility. We will cover in an age-appropriate way how to engage with police. Then, students will create their community worker play area and then do pretend play.
